Sitzen ist eine gute Idee
“What are you standing up for?” is the ever-relevant question that Antje Pfundtner invites us to ask in her solo, which has been touring extensively since 2019.
What does standing up mean for us sitting here in the theater? Is standing up a more powerful, possibly more rebellious act than sitting down?
“Sitting is a good idea” is the third part of a trilogy about melancholy, whose central figure is Albrecht Dürer’s “MELENCOLIA I”: the figure crouching and resting close to the ground, which does not take off despite its wings. Her inactivity shakes the supposed power of standing up. Is she already doing nothing, or has she not even begun to do anything? The solo “Sitzen ist eine gute Idee” (Sitting is a good idea), which takes place in the middle of the audience, focuses on the action potential of this motionlessness and creates space for other options of resistance.
“Let me describe it personally: this piece is my promise. My promise not to give up, my promise to take part in life, to fail, to carry on, to be ashamed, to take my time, to always decide freely whether I will stand up or sit down.” (Antje Pfundtner)
